English Edition: The Reichenbach - A "Bauhaus"-Synagogue

The synagogue on Reichenbachstraße in Munich, known as “Die Reichenbach”, is one of the most valuable and rare testimonies of Jewish history. As the last synagogue built in Germany before the National Socialist era, it was designed in 1931 by Gustav Meyerstein (1889–1975) in the spirit of Bauhaus modernism and fascinated contemporaries, not least because of its unique color effects.
During the Reichspogromnacht (Night of Broken Glass) from November 9 to 10, 1938, the synagogue was devastated and destroyed. After the war, it was only provisionally restored and served as the religious center of the Munich Jewish community until 2006. Initiated by Rachel Salamander, the restoration of its original, aesthetically captivating design has been carried out in recent years with great dedication by the Synagogue Reichenbachstraße Association and will reach its spectacular completion by the end of 2025.
The synagogue is intended not only to continue serving as a house of worship but also to be accessible to the wider public through educational programs and various activities. For the Torah ark curtain, a handwoven original fabric was donated by Ariel Aloni, the grandson of the Bauhaus master Gunta Stölzl, who was born in Munich. In this way, one of the pioneering Bauhaus artists returns to her birthplace and to a globally unique synagogue.
This compact, richly illustrated volume is devoted to the art-historical significance of the synagogue as well as its history and architectural design.

This book offers annotated editions of four distinct sixteenth-century Yiddish epic poems, all preserved in single copies. Two of them retell the narrative found in the book of Joshua, and two relate the events described in the book of Judges. As typical specimens of the once popular literary genre, the Old Yiddish biblical epic, the content of the works is based on Jewish sources, while their style and form were influenced by German epic and chivalric literature. The epics often elaborate on the biblical narrative, with rich passages that echo the cultural setting in which they were composed, presumably German and Italian lands. The four epics are presented here for the first time in modern academic editions. They are studied and compared with one another, and footnotes provide information concerning the sources of additions and changes, translation methods, historical details, obscure words and idiomatic expressions, and more. As these epics represent some of the earliest examples of biblical epics in Yiddish, the discussion also touches upon the origins of the genre, tracing its path from orality to written text. The annotated edition presents the original Old Yiddish texts together with an English introduction.

Volume 6 presents a first-of-its-kind, comprehensive collection of essays by Yiddish artists and intellectuals from the interwar period, including Perets Markish, Nakhmen Mayzel, Shmuel Niger, Melekh Ravitsh, Fradl Shtok, and Debora Vogel. After the khurbn (destruction) perpetrated by Nazi Germany, its allies, and collaborators, the Yiddish communities in Eastern Europe were shattered and largely decimated. For most survivors, the old homeland in the East was a lost place of longing and a place of mere transit to the centers of the reconfiguring ‘West’: in North America, the global South, and the young state of Israel. Research has for the most part ignored the cultural activities, the political engagement, and the diverse visions of those cultural activists who remained in Eastern Europe in their thousands. This volume examines their activities as well as the role of and language policy regarding Yiddish in various socialist states, as well as trans-socialist and cross-bloc dialogues during the "Yiddish Cold War." How did the actors position themselves within socialist narratives of the past, present, and future and vis-à-vis the Jewish diasporas? What were their visions for Yiddishlands in the new world of really-existing socialism and how did they attempt to implement them? Transit facilities and railway stations used for deportation have been rediscovered as central sites of the Shoah in recent years. Public memorials and monuments recall the deportation of the Jewish population to ghettos, annihilation camps, and sites of mass murder. What has long remained a desideratum is a comprehensive, comparative, and analytical overview of deportations from territories under control or influence of Nazi Germany. This volume aims to determine differences and commonalities in the organisation and implementation of deportations in Nazi-dominated Europe. It analyses the relationship between central switching points of the ‘Final Solution’ and local civilian, military and SS-Police authorities and investigates how Jewish organisations were forced to collaborate in the process of their own destruction. The present volume is devoted to the ruthlessly self-critical reflections of Yiddish translators, critics, proofreaders, teachers and scholars of translation, chiefly in Polish and Soviet cultural spaces during the interwar period. In their extensive translational and critical work, these translators and scholars furthered the development of Yiddish secular culture and its literature by exploring and creatively adopting new artistic forms and aesthetic concepts. In Yiddish Warsaw, intellectuals reflected on their commitment to the language, discussed translational strategies, criticized the arbitrary character of publishers’ programs and urged them to take a more systematic approach. Soviet Yiddish scholars and writers applied the emergent Russian linguistic theory of translation to their own work. Critiques of literary translation, for example of works by Krylov, Pushkin and Twain, from a scholarly, philological and editorial point of view was also widespread in North America. The volume contains 33 essays, beginning with a small selection on Yehoyesh’s celebrated translation of the Hebrew Bible into modern Yiddish.

The Underground Archive is the first attempt to document the Shoah from the perspective of those affected and directly during the events. Before World War II, Poland was home to 3.3 million Jews, and Warsaw was the cultural, religious and political center of this diverse community. A year after the German war of aggression began, the Nazis forced the Jewish population into a sealed-off part of the city. The historian Emanuel Ringelblum then stimulated an unprecedented project: a group working in secret, documenting the daily life of the ghetto under the code name Oneg Shabbat (Joy of Shabbat). Cut off from the world, it collected and produced a wealth of material. With the beginning of the systematic murder of Polish Jews, they unwillingly became chroniclers of the Shoah, which they themselves, with few exceptions, did not survive. After the war, a large part of the archive, buried in tin crates and milk cans, was recovered from under the ruins of the ghetto. With its approximately 35,000 preserved pages, it is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The volume is published on the occasion of the exhibition of the same name, which the NS Documentation Center Munich will open in cooperation with the Jewish Historical Institute Warsaw in June 2023.

In 2016 and 2017, archaeological excavations by the Bavarian State Office for the Preservation of Monuments in a section of the former Dachau subcamp complex Allach uncovered over 1000 objects from the concentration camp period and the various postwar reuses of the grounds. On the initiative of the Comité International de Dachau, the found pieces passed into the possession of the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site. The site at Allach was the largest subcamp in Munich. Here concentration camp prisoners performed forced labor for BMW in aircraft engine manufacturing and the construction of a bunker for production. The archaeological finds are the focal point of the exhibition “Traces of the Past. The Allach Subcamp Complex” which was presented at the Dachau Memorial Site from 2020 to 2022. These finds are complemented by a historical framework narrative using photographs, plans and maps, and film material. The catalogue presents the whole of the exhibition and also contains essays by researchers involved in the interdisciplinary exhibition project, providing an in-depth coverage of specific issues, both archaeological and historical: the excavation campaign, the analysis of the finds, the Allach subcamp and its importance in the Dachau camp system, the postwar reusages of the former camp grounds, and historical film material. Contemporary witnesses tell of their experiences in the camp complex. The exhibition and catalogue are dedicated to these survivors and the memory of the scores of victims at Allach.
