Er selbst erlebte das Kriegsende in Buchenwald und ging zunächst nach Frankreich. 1956 wurde er UNO-Berichterstatter in New York. 1958 erschien sein Welterfolg "Die Nacht." Seit 1963 ist Elie Wiesel amerikanischer Staatsbürger. 1968 erhielt er den Friedensnobelpreis. Heute ist er Professsor an der Boston University. Sein schriftstellerisches Werk umfasst Romane, Essays, Porträts, Theaterstücke und eine Autobiographie. Er wurde mit zahlreichen Auszeichnungen und Ämtern geehrt und ist Mitglied des PEN.
